It’s Christmas!
The festive spirit fills the streets, where children play joyfully in the snow that has taken everyone by surprise. Meanwhile, in the homes, preparations are underway for the grand evening. As tradition dictates, Christmas is celebrated with a lavish feast.
At one house, the celebration is about to begin, and the air is filled with the delicious aroma of food soon to be served. The table is adorned with traditional treats: nougats, wafers, shortbread, and chocolates of every shape and size. The hosts have two children, Clara and Fritz, and have invited a large gathering of friends, family, and dancers. Beneath a magnificent Christmas tree—its twinkling lights and shining star filling the room with magic—presents for everyone are waiting to be unwrapped.
As always, the most eagerly awaited guest is Drosselmeyer, Clara’s godfather. A mysterious figure, he is a magician and toy maker who never fails to amaze both children and adults with his clever tricks. This year, however, he arrives accompanied by his nephew, a young cadet Clara has never seen before.
For the children, Drosselmeyer brings wonderful gifts: wooden horses, dolls, a box of toy soldiers for Fritz, and a Nutcracker dressed as a soldier for Clara. And now, dear guests, let us all gather in the dining room and let the festivities begin!
Clara’s Dream
As the night deepens, Clara drifts off to sleep, dreaming of her godfather Drosselmeyer and the young cadet who bears an uncanny resemblance to her Nutcracker. Suddenly, she realizes the Nutcracker is all alone in the darkened living room. Feeling a pang of guilt, she gets out of bed to keep him company.
Whenever Drosselmeyer visits, magical things seem to happen, and tonight is no exception. Clara can no longer tell if she’s dreaming or awake. A strange sensation overtakes her, as if the house is growing larger—or perhaps she is shrinking smaller and smaller.
The Christmas tree towers above her, and out of nowhere, she finds herself face-to-face with the Mouse King, surrounded by his peculiar and terrifying minions. Just as panic sets in, a brave captain emerges to protect her, engaging in a fierce battle with the Mouse King.
Summoning all her courage, Clara outsmarts the wicked Mouse King and helps the captain defeat him. Drosselmeyer, who has been silently watching over his goddaughter, decides to reward her bravery. He grants her a magical wish: to grow back to her normal size and see the Nutcracker transform into a handsome prince.
At that very moment, the Sugar Plum Fairy appears and invites Clara and the prince on a magical journey to her fantastical kingdom. Their adventure begins with the Dance of the Snowflakes, where they twirl gracefully, stepping into a new and wondrous realm.
The Kingdom of Sweets
News of Clara and the prince’s extraordinary tale spreads quickly throughout the Kingdom of Sweets. The inhabitants eagerly gather to meet the young couple. The Sugar Plum Fairy introduces them to her court: Spanish chocolate, Arabian coffee, Chinese tea, French marzipan, Russian gingerbread, and candied flowers. Each captivates Clara and the prince with dazzling dances.
Finally, Clara and the prince take center stage, performing a breathtaking pas de deux. Drosselmeyer, watching from the sidelines, encourages them to declare their love for one another. But as with all dreams, this magical journey must come to an end.
Clara knows it’s time to leave this enchanting world behind. She bids farewell to its inhabitants, holding the memories close to her heart, certain that her beloved Nutcracker Prince will always be with her in spirit.
As she wakes, Clara feels a profound sense of change. She knows her life will never be the same, for the magic of the fairy tale has left its mark, even as reality awaits.
